Mexico names provisional World Cup squad
The coach of Mexico’s national soccer club, Juan Carlos Osorio, included 39-year old defender Rafael Marquez on Monday (May 14) for the preliminary match for the 2018 World Cup in Russia as he announced his provisional club.
This will mark Marquez’s fifth World Cup, matching the record set by Mexican goalie, Antonio Carbajal, German midfielder Lothar Matthäus and Italian goalie, Gianluigi Buffon.
He plans on providing his definitive list of 23 players after the match against Scotland on June 2.
Marquez ended his career at the club level on April 28 when his club Atlas tied at nil versus Pachuca.
“It’s clear that he’s availed himself, and it’s clear the desire he has to contribute to the team. We believe and hope that as with all in the end the decision will be about what he can contribute to the team on the field because off the field I think there’s no debate, that he is the player that can contribute the most to the team,” Osorio said at a newser.
