Lionel Messi met the Afghan boy in Qatar who gained internet fame earlier this year by wearing a plastic bag which mimicked Messi’s Argentina shirt.

Photographs of Murtaza Ahmadi wearing the plastic bag went viral and when Reuters interviewed the young boy in February he said he wanted to meet Messi.

On Tuesday, Murtaza was granted that wish as the Barcelona squad met the Qatari Football Association in Doha during a visit to the country.

Now, almost 11 months later, a series of images and videos posted on social media by Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee Tuesday showed Messi and Murtaza meeting for the first time.

In February, Murtaza, from Ghazni province in rural eastern Afghanistan, received an Argentina and Barcelona shirt in a package along with a ball from the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Messi.

It all started when Murtaza asked his father for a shirt like his hero Messi’s but it was outside the means of his family, his father Arif Ahmadi told Reuters.

His family decided to dress him in a blue and white plastic bag to mimic the Argentina colours and images of him in the makeshift jersey went viral.
