Kanimozhi sets sights on Thoothukudi seat for 2019 Lok Sabha polls
DMK leader Kanimozhi, whose tenure in the Rajya Sabha will come to an end by July next year, is keen on entering the electoral fray from the Thoothukudi Parliamentary constituency in 2019. DMK sources said she had already expressed her desire in this regard, though the party had adequate numbers in the Tamil Nadu Assembly to ensure her re-election to the Rajya Sabha.
“There is nothing wrong in representing the party in the Rajya Sabha. But a politician should meet the people, and direct election is the only way to build a rapport with the voters,” said a source close to Ms. Kanimozhi, explaining why she was keen on fighting the Lok Sabha polls.
Local party leaders from Thoothukudi had also urged her to contest from the constituency, the source claimed.
Ms. Kanimozhi was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2007, and again in 2013.
Besides Ms. Kanimozhi, around a dozen senior leaders, including former Union Ministers T.R. Baalu, S. Jagathratchagan, A. Raja and Dayanidhi Maran are likely to get the party ticket to contest the polls.
