Former State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran was arrested today over a controversial speech she had made recently in support of the LTTE.

She was arrested by the Police Organised Crime Prevention Division (OCPD).

The Parliamentarian was produced on court and granted bail.

Maheswaren had said in her speech that there was a need for the LTTE to be in control in the North and East to prevent crimes from taking place.

Following an uproar over the speech, Maheswaren resigned from her Government post.

The Attorney General (AG) had later advised the Inspector General of Police to take legal action against the United National Party Jaffna District Parliamentarian.

The Police had been instructed by the AG to file a case against Maheswaran under section 120 of the penal code.

According to advice given by the AG, she was to be charged for “exciting or attempts to excite feelings of disaffection to the President or to the Government of the Republic, or contempt of the administration of justice, or excites or attempts to excite the people of Sri Lanka to procure, otherwise than by lawful means, the alteration of any matter by law established, or attempts to raise discontent or disaffection amongst the people of Sri Lanka, or to promote feelings of ill-will and hostility between different classes of such people”. If found guilty the offence entails a maximum jail term of two years.
