China Premier Meets Germany’s Merkel in Beijing, Hopes to Talk About Human Rights
German Chancellor Angela Merkel met Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing on Thursday (May 24), day one of her whistlestop visit to China.
Merkel and Li attended a welcome ceremony before sitting down to talks. Li said China hopes to talk about human rights cases on an equal basis with Germany. He made the comments in a joint briefing in Beijing after the two leaders were asked about Liu Xia — the widow of Nobel Peace Prize-winner Liu Xiaobo — who has been under effective house arrest according to Beijing-based Western diplomats.
Economy and trade issues are also expected to be discussed, as well as the Iran deal.
This is Merkel’s first visit to China after her new cabinet was formed.
