The Government Medical Officers Association says President Maithripala Sirisena has agreed to appoint a special committee to obtain views from professionals over the Singapore Free Trade Agreement.

Media Spokesman of the GMOA Dr. Samantha Ananda said the Head of State arrived at the decision during a discussion held with the GMOA last evening.

Dr. Ananda said details were presented to the President over the impact on the country’s professionals and the impact the Singapore FTA has on the country.

The GMOA Media Spokesman said the FTA will be immediately suspended if the agreement entails any negative impact upon the country.

He said the President has stated that if he concludes the agreement is detrimental to the country he will take steps to annul it without any hesitation.

Dr. Ananada noted accordingly the GMOA is prepared to inform the committee in writing and even discuss the agreements shortcomings in future.

He said therefore the GMOA will reach a decision regarding future steps based on the conclusions of the committee.
