Sri Lanka Commemorate the International Workers Day Today
Sri Lanka will today commemorate the International Workers’ Day.
Following a request made by the Chief Prelates and the Maha Sangha, the government decided to postpone the May-Day celebration by a week owing to the National Vesak Week.
Accordingly, the government issued a gazette notification, declaring a special May-Day on the 7th of May.
A number of political parties and trade unions have decided to hold May-Day rallies and processions to commemorate the International Labour Day today.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party will hold its May-Day rally at the Chenkalady Grounds in Batticaloa.
The rally will be held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.
State Minister AHM Fowzie, said a massive turn out is expected during this afternoon’s SLFP May-Day rally.
The May-Day celebrations of the United National Party were held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo yesterday.
The event was held under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and was themed “Parinatha Nayakathwayata Nawa Javayak”.
Speaking at the event, party leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe noted that the UNP will continue to safeguard the rights of workers in the country and stressed that the government will create meaningful jobs for the masses.
