Air India waives off cancellations charges for Colombo flights Due to the Emergency
In consideration of the crisis in the country, the national carrier Air India today waived-off penalties for a date or flight change, refund, no-show, reissuance and cancellation, if there’s any, on confirmed tickets till Friday, March 9.
Air India also assured passengers in a tweet that its flights to and from Colombo are operating as normal. A nationwide state of emergency was declared by President Maithripala Sirisena on Tuesday after communal violence erupted in the Theldeniya area and spread to other areas of the central hill district that left two people dead and damaged several mosques and homes.
The continued violence forced the authorities to impose an indefinite curfew in the district. Emergency has been in imposed in Sri Lanka for 10 days as a precautionary measure. The announcement came a day after Buddhists and Muslims clashed in the island nation’s central district of Kandy.
Tension has been growing between the two communities in Sri Lanka over the past year. And yesterday, Sri Lanka suspended internet services and blocked access to social networking sites and messaging platforms like Whatsapp until further notice in the riot-hit Kandy after police warned that rioters were using them to spread hatred against the minority Muslims. An official said that it was a “temporary measure” and soon all the restrictions would be removed.
