British Royal Family in Sri Lanka Independence Day

The Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, and the Countess of Wessex, arrived in Sri Lanka this afternoon to commemorate Sri Lanka’s 70th Independence Day on February 4.

Prince Edward accompanied by Princess Sophie will participate in Sri Lanka’s 70th Independence Day celebration as the chief guest representing the Royal family of Britain.

They are scheduled to engage in several social welfare activities during their stay in Sri Lanka and will also tours the island.

Tomorrow the royal guests will visit the Temple of Tooth Relic in Kandy and receive blessings. Later in the afternoon they scheduled to tour the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens.

They are scheduled to attend an exhibition and cultural program by the blind children at the Ratmalana School for the Deaf and Blind.

The Earl and Countess will also meet representatives of a number of projects advancing causes they support through their work, including MENCAFEP, whose work to help differently-abled children and their families in the Nuwara Eliya, Trincomalee and Batticaloa Districts illustrates the close links between the people of Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom.

Prince Edward is the youngest child of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh.
