Trump supporters disrupt speech by London Mayor Sadiq Khan
Protesters shouting slogans supporting U.S. President Donald Trump and Brexit interrupted a speech by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, in London on Saturday (January 13).
Khan’s speech on gender equality at the Fabian Society, a left-wing thinktank, was disrupted by a small group of protesters holding a U.S. flag and telling Khan that “there’s millions of British people supporting Donald Trump.” They also called for a citizen’s arrest of Khan and other delegates at the New Year conference.
The protesters were escorted from the venue by police. Khan then referred to them in his speech as “very stable geniuses”, borrowing a term that Trump had called himself last week following an author’s accusations that he was mentally unfit for office.
The protest came after Khan, who has often exchanged barbs with Trump on social media, on Friday (January 12) tweeted that Trump had “got the message” that many Londoners thought the U.S. leader was not welcome in the city while “pursuing such a divisive agenda”.
