Girls train at ice sports camp in Indian Kashmir
A 10-day ice sports training camp for girls is underway in Leh town of Indian Kashmir.
The free training camp, organised by Ladakh Woman Ice Hockey Foundation (LWIHF), is aimed at encouraging more girls to take up sports like ice hockey and ice skating. A total of 110 girls of all ages are participating in the camp.
The girls were seen practicing at Guphuks pond near Spituk village on Thursday (January 04) as their coaches kept an eye and guided them. The girls have been provided the gear and sportsequipment free of cost.
The training programme has been divided into three levels – basic, intermediate and advanced and participants have been divided according to their skills. The camp began on January 01 and will conclude on January 11.
Ice skating is popular in Himalayan regions of India like Kashmir and Shimla where sub-zero temperatures cause water bodies to freeze. Much of India has a tropical climate, hence ice sportsare limited to the few artificial rinks available.
