Ethiopian Dawit Admasu wins Brazil’s Sao Silvestre race
African racers took the top three spots on Sunday (December 31) in the 93rd edition of the Sao Silvestre Road Race in Sao Paulo, with Ethiopian Dawit Admasu placing first with a time of 44 minutes and 15 seconds.
Close behind him was fellow Ethiopian Belay Tilahun Bezabeh at 44 minutes and 33 seconds and Kenyan Edwin Kipsang Rotich was third at 44 minutes and 43 seconds.
The top female finisher was 33-year-old Kenyan Flomena Cheyech Daniel who finished the race with a time of 50 minutes and 18 seconds. The second and third place winners were Ethiopians Sintayehu Lewetegn HaileMichael and Birhane Dibara Adugana with times of 50 minutes 50 seconds and 50 minutes 57 seconds, respectively.
According to organizers, 30,000 people signed up to participate in the 15-kilometre race which is named after a 4th century pope. Other Saint Silvestre races are run in Italy, Spain and Portugal.
