Peruvian national soccer team train ahead of their World Cup qualifying match
The Peruvian national soccer team trained in Auckland on Tuesday (November 7) ahead of their World Cup qualifying match against New Zealand on Saturday (November 11).
The suspension of Captain Paolo Guerrero for their World Cup playoff is a blow to the South American side but midfielder Renato Tapia told reporters that the team support Guerrero and need to be calm and focused for the upcoming games.
Peru’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1982 were dealt a setback after soccer’s governing body FIFA provisionally suspended Guerrero for failing a doping test.
The 33-year-old, Peru’s all-time top scorer, netted six goals in the qualifying stage to lead his country to the intercontinental playoff.
The return leg will be held at the Estadio Nacional de Lima in Peru’s capital on Nov. 15.
