Demonstrators in Jaffna demand release of political prisoners
New Democratic Marxist Leninist Party and the mass organization for social justice held a demonstration on Tuesday demanding the release of political prisoners held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
The protesters gathered near the central bus stand, urged to ‘reverse the transfer of the political prisoners cases from the Tamil Vavuniya High Court to the Sinhalese Anuradhapura court’, and ‘Release all political prisoners without any condition’.
The three prisoners were due to be tried in a court in Vavuniya, a Tamil area where their case could have been heard in the Tamil language. However, the trial was shifted to Anuradhapura, a Sinhalese area where court proceedings would occur in the Sinhala language.
They began a hunger strike on September 25 demanding that their case be heard in a Tamil area.
