Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara has notified the National Police Commission that the report, compiled, pertaining to the issues surrounding an alleged Police assault on protesters, during the recent unrest in Hambantota, will be handed over next week.

Secretary to the Commission Ariyadasa Cooray confirmed that the report is expected next week. Accordingly, Secretary Cooray said the Commission will deliberate the contents of the report and initiate further action.

An Assistant Superintendent of Police involved in the incident was issued transfer orders. Furthermore, the NPC launched a separate investigation into the incident.

The so-called joint opposition launched the demonstration against the government’s alleged decision to promote international investments targeting the Hambantota Harbour and the Mattala International Airport.

Following a tense situation, Police arrested several persons including parliamentarians and provincial councillors on charges of violating a court injunction. Parliamentarian Prasanna Ranweera, Provincial Councillor Upali Kodikara and several others remain in remand custody over the Hambantota unrest.
