Britain’s Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said on Monday (October 16) it was time to begin “serious negotiations” on Brexit, hours before Prime Minister Theresa May visits Brussels in an attempt to unlock the stalled talks.

Johnson, arriving for talks in Luxembourg with his European Union peers, said it was time to “start some serious conversations about the future and the new relationship”, in a reference to the trade negotiations that London has tried to bring forward in the agenda.

Negotiations are stuck over the Brexit bill, the Irish border and citizens’ rights. Until sufficient progress is made on these three areas, the EU has said it will not move to the next stage of talks about the future trade relations with Britain. London wants to start this second phase of talks as soon as possible.

May’s office said on Sunday she would meet the European Union’s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier and the head of the bloc’s executive Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, in Brussels on Monday.
