France look to take a huge step towards Russia 2018
After a goalless draw at home against Luxembourg in the previous round, Group A leaders France need to win the last two matches in order to guarantee an automatic qualification to Russia 2018. Les Bleus travel to Bulgaria on Saturday (October 7), where the sides meet at Vasil Levski stadium in Sofia.
A win against Bulgaria will be enough to secure a top-two spot for the visitors. Bulgaria sit fourth in the group and, mathematically, can still dream of a World Cup qualification. However, the situation is far from comfortable for the home side. The Bulgarians are four points adrift of Sweden and one point behind Netherlands, who sit third in the group. Bulgaria must beat France to stay in the hunt to qualify. France won the reverse fixture 4-1 at home in October last year.
For the French captain, Hugo Lloris, it’s a must-win game for his side in Sofia. The goalkeeper said that France need to show more intensity in comparison to the last game against Luxembourg.
