Kuczynski gives Pope Peru soccer jersey ahead of Argentine World Cup qualifier
Peru President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski in the Vatican on Friday (September 22) gave Pope Francis a Peruvian national soccer team jersey ahead of a crucial World Cup qualifier against the Pope’s home-team Argentina.
According to reports, the pontiff warmly received the gift from Kuczynski. However, Argentina’s hopes of automatic qualification for Russia rest on it defeating Peru.
Peru has not qualified for a World Cup since 1982 and is ranked number four in the South America qualifying table. Argentina are sitting just below Peru at number five. The top four South American teams qualify for the World Cup. The fifth-placed side goes up against the winning Oceania team for a ticket to Russia.
Peru and Argentina face off with each other on October 5 for their World Cup qualifer.
