FIFA U-17 World Cup trophy unveiled at colourful ceremony in southern India
The FIFA U-17 World Cup Winner’s Trophy was on Friday (September 22) unveiled in a colourful ceremony in India’s southern Kochi city.
A vibrant cultural programme showcasing the traditional art forms of the state was held to reveal the trophy.
It was unveiled at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium complex by state sports minister A.C. Moideen. The official mascot of FIFA U-17 World Cup India, a clouded leopard, ‘Kheleo’ was also brought in for the event.
Kerala will play host to eight matches including the pre-quarterfinal that would be played on October 18 and the quarter-final on October 22.
Defending champions will also play their group-stage matches in Kerala and Moideen said all arrangements had been made to welcome the foreign players and turn the tournament into a grand success.
The World Cup is going to start from October 06 and end on October 28. Twenty-four teams are taking part in the tournament, which India is hosting for the first time.
India has been drawn into Group A of the World Cup along with United States of America (USA), Colombia and Ghana. The hosts will face U.S.A. in the inaugural match on October 6, before facing Colombia on October 9 and Ghana on October 11.
It is a historic occasion for host as it makes its World Cup debut. The host nation automatically enters the tournament.
