The Office of Missing Persons (OMP) will come into operation tomorrow (15) as authorized by the Gazette notification signed by President Maithripala Sirisena, a press communiqué issued by the Secretary to the Ministry for National Integration and Reconciliation said. President Sirisena in his capacity as the Minister for National Integration and Reconciliation sanctioned the Gazette to operationalize the OMP Tuesday (12).

The press communiqué indicated that the OMP will be established and its functions, duties, and mandate will come into operation with effect from tomorrow. The ministry stated that this initiative comes one week after the discussion the President had with the family members of the missing persons.

Last Monday(11) United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, during his opening statement at the 36th session of the UNHRC, urged the Sri Lankan Government to swiftly operationalize the Office of Missing Persons (OMP) and to move faster on other essential confidence building measures.
