At least 19 dead as boat capsizes in northern India
At least 19 people were killed in India’s northern Uttar Pradesh state on Thursday (September 14) after a boat carrying over 60 people capsized in Yamuna river.
The boat was on its way to neighbouring Haryana state when it capsized in Baghpat district.
Reportedly, around 10 people swam to safety, while the remaining 31 are missing.
Police and teams of divers rushed to the spot and a search operation is underway to fish out bodies or survivors. Local residents too joined in the operations.
Overcrowding is believed to be the cause for the accident as the boat had a capacity of 35 passenger only, said local media reports. An official investigation is underway to ascertain the cause.
Uttar Pradesh chief, Yogi Adityanath, announced a compensation of rupees 200,000 rupees (approximately $3,000) for families of the deceased.
