India whitewash Sri Lanka in ODI series too
India on Sunday (September 03) whitewashed Sri Lanka in One-Day International (ODI) series as well, winning it by 5-0, as skipper Virat Kohli steered the team to six-wicket victory with his unbeaten century in the final ODI in Colombo.
After sweeping both the Test and ODI series in Sri Lanka, Kohli said his team wanted to be relentless in its approach and maintain the intensity in each game.
Brilliant performances from skipper Virat Kohli (110 not out) and right-arm pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar helped India thrash Sri Lanka by six wickets in the final ODI, thereby clinching a clean-sweep in the five-match series.
Kohli was ably supported by spin all-rounder Kedar Jadhav, who contributed with a quick-fire 63 as the duo shared a 109-run stand to take the visitors enroute their first overseas whitewash since 2013.
During the post-match news conference, the skipper also praised pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who was adjudged ‘man of the series’ for clinching 15 wickets in the series.
Kohli said the 23-year-old Bumrah has improved a lot and in addition to Yorkers and slow balls, his good-length deliveries have become lethal too.
Earlier, Bhuvneshwar picked up fifer as India bundled out Sri Lanka for 238.
Opting to bat first, Sri Lanka did not have the greatest of starts as they lost three wickets inside the first 10 overs.
Though Lahiru Thirimanne and Angelo Mathews steadied the ship in the middle overs and took the side to 185, the Lankan side lost the momentum in the death overs, as their last seven wickets could add only 53 runs.
Sri Lanka ODI skipper Upul Tharanga said they were disappointed with their batting and complimented Indian batsman for leading their side to victories in four of the five matches, while batting second.
This is the second successive ODI series defeat for the Lankan team.
The two teams will now square-off in the lone T20I to be played on Wednesday (September 6).
