British PM meets Japanese Emperor on final day of visit
British Prime Minister Theresa May met with Japanese emperor Akihito at the imperial palace on Friday (September 1) on the last day of her three-day visit to Japan.
Akihito is expected to abdicate at the end of 2018 after he said last August he feared age would make it hard to fulfill his duties.
May, on her first official visit to Japan as prime minster held bilateral talks with her counterpart Shinzo Abe on Thursday (August 31) and agreed to cooperate in countering the threat posed by North Korea.
She also tried to reassure local businesses and politicians as both countries aim to put in place a bilateral trade agreement as soon as the UK leaves the European Union.
May will wrap up her Japan visit after meeting British residents in Tokyo and visiting venues for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.
