5 ports will be re constructed in Jaffna: Mahinda Amaraweera
Minister of fisheries and Aquatic resource Development Mahinda Amaraweera held discussions with several piscators of the North along with the Governor of the Northern Province Reginald Cooray to discuss the complications faced by the northern fishing community.
Through the discussions that were held at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Development, a consensus was arrived upon to reconstruct 05 dilapidated fishing ports in the northern region of Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, the fishing ports of Tellippalai, Mathagal, Pungudutivu, Anakotta and Mandaitivu will be reconstructed for the utilization of Northern fishermen.
The Minister stated that steps have already been taken to begin reconstruction. He also stated that currently, officials are demarcating lands that will be used for the storage of fuel and fish in close proximity to the ports.
Minister Amaraweera also stated that programs will be conducted to familiarize the fishing community with new technology and provide them with several new fishing trawlers.
