Guangzhou R&F missed the chance to leapfrog Shandong Luneng in the Chinese Super League on Sunday (August 20), drawing 1-1 against their rivals for an Asian Champions League qualifying spot.

The home side looked on course for all three points – and the chance to go third – when they were given a controversial penalty in the second half.

Israeli forward Eran Zahavi converted, but the lead lasted only two minutes.

Shandong stopper Cheng Yuelei spilled a cross into the path of Graziano Pelle, who made no mistake from eight yards.

Both sides could have won the match in stoppage time, but Papiss Cisse wasted two good chances for Shandong, while Brazilian Renatinho couldn’t convert for R&F.
