Kayts Magistrate M.M. Riyal yesterday queried the delay in questioning State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran, over video footage submitted to the Court by the Defence Counsel of former Jaffna Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, Lalith Jayasinghe, in connection with the murder of Vithya Sivaloganathan.

Responding to the Magistrate, State Counsel Nishanth Nagaratnam said that on the directive of the Attorney General’s Department, the CID will, in a couple of days, question the authenticity of the video footage from State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran.

Meanwhile, former DIG Lalith Jayasinghe was further remanded till 22 August.

A week earlier, Jayasinghe’s defence counsel had submitted to Court video footage, which had indicated the presence of State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran at the site where one of the prime suspects, in schoolgirl Vithya Sivaloganathan murder, was tied to a post.

The Magistrate directed the Attorney General’s Department to expedite the investigation into the video footage.

Maheswaran earlier told that she was in Punkuduthivu soon after the crime was committed, to ensure the arrest of the suspects and to console the family of victim, Vithya Sivaloganathan.
