Northern Provincial Councilor Kesavan Sayanthan of Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi said on Saturday (June 17) that they would grab power of the Provincial Council by ensuring majority of members to expel current Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran.

A No Confidence Motion against Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran requesting his removal from the post has been handed over to Northern Province Governor Reginald Cooray.

The no-confidence motion with signatures of 21 members in the 38-member Northern Provincial Council was reportedly handed over to the Governor on Wednesday.

The Chief Minister, on the recommendations made by a committee appointed to probe corruption, called for the resignation of Provincial Ministers of Education and Agriculture over corruption and fraud allegations.

Mr. Wigneswaran has asked NPC Education Minister T. Kurukularaja and Agriculture Minister P. Aingaranesan to hand over resignation letters by Thursday noon.

Meanwhile, a hartal was being held in Sri Lanka’s North Friday demanding to withdraw the no-confidence motion against the Chief Minister of the Northern Province C.V. Wigneswaran.

All the shops in Jaffna were closed but the services at state institutions were continuing normally.

The Hartal was organized by the Tamil People’s Council (TPC) headed by the Chief Minister Wigneswaran and professionals and public organizations had also joined the Hartal.
