Vidya Murder Case: First sitting of trial-at-bar today

The case of rape and murder of Sivalokananthan Vidya of Punkuduthivu was taken for hearing before the three member trial-at-bar at the Jaffna High Court this morning (June 12).

Nine suspects who were arrested in connection with the case and currently in remand have already been served indictments on 41 criminal charges.

Vavuniya High Court Judge Balasingham Shashi Mahendran (Chairman) Jaffna High Judge M. Illancheyalan and Trincomalee High Court Judge Annalingam Premshankar are the three judges to the trial-at-bar.

Chief Justice Priyasath Dep yesterday appointed a three member trial-at-bar at the Jaffna High Court to hear the case into the gang rape and murder of Sivalokananthan Vidya, a student from Punkuduthivu.

Vidya, who was 18 at the time, was abducted, gang raped and later murdered at Punkuthudivu on May 18, 2015.

The case will be taken up on 28th, 29th 30th of this month and 3rd, 4th and 5th of July and all 37 witnesses of the case were ordered to be appeared on the hearing days.
