A programme has been implemented by the Police Child and Women Bureau Headquarters, to arrest those who use children to earn money by begging.

During the period from March 01 to May, 11 boys and 7 girls who were driven to beg have been taken into Police custody and subsequently produced before the courts.

Following this, 4 of the aforementioned 18 children have been placed in probation custody, whilst the remaining 14 have been placed in parental custody under court bonds.

Police stated that there is an apparent increase in the use of children for begging purposes, and added that operations to prevent this have been implemented by 42 abuse prevention task forces in and Colombo.
