24 people died when wall collapsed during wedding party in India
Two more people died in the wall collapse incident in India’s northwestern Rajasthan province, taking the death toll to 24, state health minister, Kali Charan Saraf said on Thursday (May 11).
At least five children were among the dead and around 30 others were injured in the mishap.
The 12-foot (3.6-metre) high wall collapsed late on Wednesday (May 10) because of heavy rain, crashing down on the wedding party during dinner in a marriage hall. It fell on the guests who had taken shelter under a tin shed near the wall.
Saraf met the injured undergoing treatment at a local hospital. State chief Vasundhra Raje is also expected to visit the spot.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a Twitter post he was pained by the accident. Weddings are elaborate affairs in India with even people of modest income inviting large numbers of guests to receptions, often in purpose-built halls.
