Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told media on Monday (May 8) he sent a congratulatory text to French president-elect Emmanuel Macron.

Macron was elected president on Sunday (May 7) with a business-friendly vision of European integration, defeating Marine Le Pen, a far-right nationalist who threatened to take France out of the European Union.

“I have congratulated president-elect Macron and I sent him a text and I got a response back thanking me for the congratulations and looking forward to working together…So we have great work to do to make the ties between France and Australia stronger still,” said Turnbull.

The centrist’s emphatic victory, which also smashed the dominance of France’s mainstream parties, will bring huge relief to European allies who had feared another populist upheaval to follow Britain’s vote to quit the EU and Donald Trump’s election as U.S. president.
