BCCI felicitates former captains on India’s 500th Test

The occasion big as India kick off a long home season with a landmark 500th Test match against New Zealand in Kanpur. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as planned felicitated the former India Test captains before the start of play.

The team, which was announced to mark India’s 500th Test match starting on Thursday against New Zealand in Kanpur, includes former Test skipper Sunil Gavaskar and Virender Sehwag as openers, according to a release by Wisden India.

Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman make up the middle-order with Dravid being the No 3 batsman, followed by Tendulkar and Laxman.

Dhoni, currently India’s captain for one-dayer and T20 teams, also remains the wicket-keeper.

Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association secretary Rajeev Shukla felicitated the former captains, which included Ajit Wadekar, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Kris Srikkanth, Ravi Shastri, Mohammad Azharuddin, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble and MS Dhoni.

India have a bumper home season ahead with 13 Tests to be played against teams like New Zealand, England and Australia. New Zealand are the first team visiting India and will play three Tests and five one-dayers.

Also included are pacers Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan and spin stalwarts Anil Kumble, Bishan Singh Bedi. Former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin was named the 12th man.
