Fire at Knuckles: Destroys over 1,000 acres, now under control
Around 1,000 acres in the Knuckles mountain forest reserve were destroyed in a fire which broke out last Thursday (Sep 8).
Disaster Management Centre sources said the fire has now been brought under control with the assistance of the Air Force, wildlife officials and villagers. However, villagers said the fire at the Kahatagolla forest reserve last Thursday had still not been doused.
The dry weather prevailing in the area had resulted in the fire spreading to other areas, officials said. Police are conducting a probe to ascertain whether poachers were responsible for the fire.
Police on an earlier occasion had found that several fires had been started by poachers hunting for wild animals in the forest.
