The United National Party will celebrate its 70th Anniversary Today (06th September 2016).

An all-night Pirith chanting ceremony was held on Sunday night followed by offering of mid day dana to the Maha Sangha yesterday (05th September).

The main anniversary celebrations and the party convention will be held on the 10th of this month at Campbell Park grounds, in Borella under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. President Maithripala Sirisena is due to participate as the Chief Guest of the event.

The United National Party was formed on the 6th of September 1946 with several prominent leaders from the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities. DS Senanayake was the first leader of the UNP. The UNP was formed in a bid to gain independence from the British rule and contested the 1947 election.
