Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said giving Tamils voting rights alone is not sufficient; their basic needs must be met. He made these remarks during a membership recruitment drive for the United National Party (UNP) in Hatton on Sunday (Aug 28).
He said Tamils should be given houses to live in: “We have taken lands from estates to build houses for these people,” the Prime Minister said. “I will discuss with Minister Digambaram how these houses should be built.
He said that in addition to this, children should be given a good education: “The government has initiated a programme to begin teaching science for the Advanced Level, in the estates and in other places. We want the estates to leapfrog to join the other districts,” he said.
“In addition people who have been living in government lands for 10 years without deeds will be given deeds,” he promised.
