Britain’s new finance minister Philip Hammond met Chinese vice Premier Ma Kai in Beijing on Friday (July 22).

Ma and Hammond greeted each other with a handshake before sitting down for talks at the Zhongnanhai Leadership Compound. Hammond will attend the G20 meeting in Chengdu on Saturday (July 23) and Sunday (July 24).

The Group of 20 finance ministers and central bankers will put the spotlight on Hammond, who makes his international debut at the gathering and will need to answer questions about how London will manage its exit from the European Union.

He will promote British business opportunities during his trip in China, with a strong emphasis on the sector of financial services, the UK government’s website said.
