Heavy downpours triggered flood and mudflow in Zhaotong City, southwest China’s Yunnan Province beginning Tuesday morning, damaging buildings and infrastructures and affecting people’s life.

In one of Zhaotong’s worst-hit towns, Lianghe Town, the devastating flood broke down a bridge and swept away a brick factory near the river.

Although the level of floodwater has substantially receded, the cracked road and collapsed bridge pier posed danger to rescuers and the more than 1,000 trapped local residents who live on the other side of the river.

Local infrastructure department has dispatched experts to the site to check out the situation on Thursday in order to repair the broken road and bridge as soon as possible.

According to local civil affairs department, electricity and water supply that was affected by the flood earlier had been restored in most areas by Thursday noon.

The aftermath relief operation is still under way.
