15 % VAT increase on liquor and cigarettes- Minister

Minister of Special Projects, Dr. Sarath Amunugama said the government has decided to impose a 15 per cent (Value Added Tax) VAT increase on liquor and cigarettes and to remove VAT on all medical tests and dialysis service.

Further he added that the VAT imposed on international air tickets would also be removed while the VAT on domestic air tickets would not be changed.

This decision has been made at the Economic Committee meeting yesterday and the proposals regarding the tax alterations would be submitted to the Cabinet coming Tuesday.
