German Foreign Minister meets Chinese counterpart in Beijing
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, met his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi in Beijing on Sunday (June 12) as Chancellor Angela Merkel’s official state visit got underway in Beijing.
Steinmeier shook hands with Wang before the two sides sat down to talks.
The visit comes amidst growing concerns in Berlin over barriers to foreign firms in China, Beijing’s more muscular foreign policy and its increased authoritarianism at home.
This will be Merkel’s ninth visit to China since taking office, and she faces growing pressure from industry to confront the Chinese more forcefully following a wave of Chinese takeovers of German firms.
