A government spokesman says rescue workers recovered 12 bodies buried in landslides caused by heavy rains in central Sri Lanka, raising the death toll due to bad weather to 23.

Pradeep Kodippili, the spokesman of the Disaster Management Center, said Wednesday that the 12 victims had lived in houses buried by the mudslides that occurred Tuesday evening. The villages affected are about 72 kilometers (45 miles) from the capital, Colombo.

Kodippili said the actual numbers of people and houses caught in the landslides were not available.

The Meteorological Department has forecast more rain and rough seas for much of the island nation.

The Disaster Management Center reported on Tuesday that 11 people died due to landslides and electrocution.
