According to the Budgetary Relief Allowance for Workers Act 2016, all private sectors are requested to grant 2,500 salary increments in Sri Lanka.

If there is any employer who does not act according to this Act, he/she/company will be deemed as acting against the law and legal action taken against him/her/company, Labour and trade Unions Relations Minister W.D.J.Seneviratne said.

Addressing the media at the Government Information Department Auditorium on Thursday (April 28) he said that if any private sector worker does not receive the Rs. 2500, he or she can complain to the Labour Commissioner General or the Labour Offices located all over the country.

If the employers have already increased the salaries (before passage of the Act), they can deduct the relevant amount and pay the balance making it a Rs. 2500 increase. The employers should pay the arrears from May 2015 to March 2016. They can pay the arrears once or at least in 12 instalments. All private sector employees drawing less than Rs. 40,000 salary are entitled to the Rs.2,500
