Cultural Centre inside Dutch Fort, Jaffna opened

Action is to be taken to promote culture and values among our people, document it, preserve the hereditary remains at Delft and to expand the Jaffna University Museum, said the Professor of History of the Jaffna University and the Northern Province Director of the Central Cultural Fund, Pusparatnam.

As a preliminary activity a cultural centre was opened inside the Dutch Fort was opened by the visiting Minister of Education Akilaviraj Kariyawasagam and the foundation stone for the new cultural center was also laid by him yesterday. Further, he opened the office for the Northern Province Central Cultural Fund in a house at Pandarikulam, Nallur.

The events yesterday were jointly organized by the Ministry of Education, Department of Archeology and the Central Cultural Centre. It was also announced that arrangements are being made for the archaeological remains of Pollonnaruwa to be exhibited in the cultural center in Dutch fort.

In the context of Archeological excavations being suspended for 36 years, the Cultural Centre is to be established as per the recommendation of the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe and Archaeological remains are to be exhibited there, he said. Minister of state for Children’s Affairs, Wijeyakala Maheswaran also participated in these events.
