The Minister of Women’s and Child Affairs Vijayakala Maheswaran reportedly said the interference of a senior officer of the department of the Attorney General was the reason of the denial of granting bail for Tamil political prisoners though the government came forward to release them on bail.

While commenting on this topic to a media, the minister said, it was decided to grant bail on the basis of the charges as it was unlikely to grant amnesty in a recent discussion in a meeting headed by the Premier.

She also pointed out the government had to change its decision as it was told that granting amnesty to Tamil political prisoners could be the reason for the outbreak of the fifth Ealam War and terrorist threat by the leader of the Patriotic National Movement Gunadasa Amarasekara.

She further pointed out that she had discussion with the Minister of Justice with regard to the release of the prisoners and he had told the decision   must be taken by the Attorney General.
