MR to make special statement today

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is due to make a special statement from Carlton House at Tangalle today (01) regarding the political stance he will adopt at the forthcoming election. He will make this statement subsequent to the Dhamma Sermon that is to be delivered today at the Carlton House on behalf of Esala Full Moon Poya Day.

Prior to the former President making the statement, the committee of party leaders of the Alliance are due to offer Mahinda Rajapaksa a sheaf of betel and invite him to contest the Parliamentary Election as the Prime Ministerial Candidate of the United People’s Freedom Alliance. A procession of vehicles has been organized from Dondra in Matara this morning by the Joint Opposition to the Carlton House to make this invitation.

The National Freedom Front, The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna, the Democratic Left Front, the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya are due to express their support to Mahinda Rajapaksa and a group representing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, inclusive of Wimal Weerawansha, Dinesh Gunawardena, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Udaya Gammanpila, Dullas Alahapperuma, Bandula Gunawardena and a number of their supporters are due to participate in this vehicle procession.

Arrangements have been made for this procession of vehicles to leave for the Carlton House representing various areas of the island and join together at Dondra in Matara as a single procession, sources said.
