MR has been provided security to stay at home: Dr. Rajitha Senaratne
Queried on an issue raised by the former President recently over his security, Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said the former President has been provided security for his personal safety but not on a scale to ensure protection when he goes addressing meetings in temples and elsewhere.
Dr. Senaratne said action will be taken against those responsible for placing the advertisement as the UPFA has not given its consent for such a meeting.
When a journalist queried whether appointing the former President as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the UPFA will benefit the party, Dr. Senaratne answered in the negative. He said if such a thing happened the UPFA might lose minority votes in addition to those of intellectuals and the youth resulting in a defeat for the party at the next general election.
Questioned if the former President sought nominations to contest the next election from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Dr. Senaratne said he was not aware of such a request. The minister however said that the former President’s son has sought nominations from the SLFP and he would be given the opportunity to contest.
Dr. Senaratne referring to some SLFP politicians who have threatened to contest under a separate party at the next polls said that all those who have said so have sought nominations from the SLFP.
