Canadians lose on controversial non-call

The Montreal Canadians lost a heart-breaking Game 1 in double overtime to the Tampa Bay Lightning Friday night at the Bell Center. But the play should have been whistled dead before Lightning winger Nikita Kucherov scored at 2:06, which clinched the 2-1 victory for the Lightning.

Shortly after Kucherov’s goal, replays revealed Lightning center Valtteri Filppula was off-side as the Lightning entered the Canadians’ end.

The missed call is a moot point now, but  didn’t stop Canadians head coach Michel Therein from voicing his frustration to reporters following the game. Therein lamented the non-call while celebrating his team’s effort. He emphasized that an off-side is not a judgment call the same way that a penalty would be.
