Over 790 motorists were arrested for offence of drunk and Drive – ASP Ruwan Gunasekara

Sri Lanka police have arrested over 790 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during the past five days of New Year festivities. Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said 792 persons driving under influence have been arrested during the past 5 days. Majority of them are motorcyclists and three wheel drivers. According to the police, 402 motorcyclists, 307 three-wheel drivers and 26 car drivers were among those arrested during the last four days for drunk driving.

Police said 190 drunk drivers were arrested from around the country during the 24 hours ending at 6 am Wednesday and the arrested motorists will be produced before court. The Police Department launched a special island wide operation to nab drunk drivers during the New Year period. The operation will continue all throughout this week until Monday, the Spokesperson said. About 500 police officers in plain clothes have been deployed for the safety of the public. In addition special security programs are underway at police stations level in each town.
